Puan Siti Leeila Maymar was born in 1971 in Kampong Tembakau, Perak. She grew up in a family that has been involved in the batik business for six decades. Being the eldest of three siblings, she took it upon herself to keep the family business going at the age of 22.

Puan Maymar at the same time also pursued her degree in fashion design at the Paris Royal College of Arts.

Her batik pieces from the collection “Kelipan Luruh” are currently considered one of the most priceless in the world and have been auctioned for $650,000 at the Museum of Oriental Culture and Arts in Paris.

At present, Puan Maymar has her own school of design, the Malaysia College of Arts in Petaling Jaya with approximately 300 students, and is one of MyYouth’s cultural arts supervisors.

Batik Workshops

Summer seems to have rolled in ahead of schedule, and with it comes its regular passengers of unbearable heat and scorching sun. So, while we’re rummaging about our wardrobes for comfortable clothing to bear with the weather, why not add a little summer colour to the mix and brighten things up a bit?

To kick off our celebrations for the summer holidays, MyYouth welcomes you to come join us at the ‘Splashes of Colour’ event  a batik workshop organised and hosted by our very own batik trainees, who have worked long and hard to become proud connoisseurs of the art.

Search through those closets, pull out all the drab articles of clothing you never get round to wearing, and bring them all over – we will help you completely transform your plain white cotton shirts or dull-coloured skirts into a pretty piece of art!

We have a range of tools at the ready for budding artists to hand-print their own designs. And don’t worry about making mistakes  we have our home-grown experts at hand to help you along every step of the way.

If you’re not confident with drawing your own designs, you can always head over to the block-printing stations instead, and relive the childhood glee of stamping colours however you please on a blank canvass, before dunking it all into a drum of dye and playing with paint, reliving the abandon of our kid-days.

And let’s not forget the main aim of the game: having fun. Knock yourselves out with our innumerable selections of design-blocks, buckets of dye, trails and trails of colourful clothing hung out to dry  we can confidently guarantee that the atmosphere is going to be vibrant, energetic and infectious, and not something you want to miss.

So bring along your friends and customise your clothing in any way you want, or select a design from our collections and watch Janice Lau, aspiring fashion designer and avid lover of traditional crafts, bring it to life for you, walking you through the customary process of printing Malaysian batik in the process.

The best part? You get to take home the end result!

So let’s make this a weekend’s worth of fun  let’s get comfortable in style!
